  1. What broke — specific component, specific reading, specific threshold.
  2. What else was happening — the context that distinguishes a real problem from a one-off spike.
  3. What it probably means — the diagnosis, in plain language, not raw codes or sensor IDs.
  4. What to do — a concrete next step the recipient can act on within a minute.
  5. Where to dig deeper — a link to the dashboard view that shows the surrounding history.

Here is the same alert in the bad form and the useful form, side by side:

The second message is what the recipient actually needed. It diagnoses the cause, names the responsible app, rules out the unrelated suspects, and tells them what to fix — in two sentences they can read while the phone is still in their hand.

Sample Alert Workflows by Scenario

Below are the alert templates we use for the four highest-frequency hardware events. Each one follows the five-part structure above. Copy the format, not the wording — the wording should match your audience.

1. Thermal event (GPU or CPU exceeded safe limit)

Notice what is not in any of these alerts: raw sensor IDs, Windows error codes without translation, technical jargon a non-technical user couldn't act on. Every alert leads with the interpretation, not the data.

Step-by-Step: Setting Up Telegram Hardware Alerts

The setup has two halves: telling Telegram you want a bot, and telling your monitoring agent where to send the alerts. The whole thing takes about ten minutes.

Step 1 — Install Telegram on your phone (skip if you already have it)

Download from the App Store or Google Play. Sign in with your phone number. That is the entire client side.

Step 3 — Define what triggers an alert

This is where most homemade setups fail. The temptation is to alert on every threshold cross. Don't. Two principles:

  • Threshold + duration, not threshold alone. A GPU hitting 90°C for one second during a load spike is normal. Sustained above 90°C for 60 seconds is not. Alert on the second case, not the first.
  • Trend, not just value. A sensor reading in isolation is just a number. The same reading in the context of the machine's recent history is a signal. "GPU hotspot is 95°C" matters less than "GPU hotspot has climbed 12°C compared to the same workload last month."

Step 4 — Compose the message in the five-part structure

Not every alert needs all five parts — a fan failure is mostly what broke and what to do. But every alert needs at least three: what broke, what it probably means, what to do. Skip any of those three and the alert becomes the useless one-liner from earlier.

Step 5 — Add a quiet-hours rule

Nobody wants a non-critical alert at 03:00. Decide which events are urgent enough to wake you and which can wait until morning. A reasonable default:

  • Wake-the-user alerts: BSOD, unexpected shutdown, GPU hotspot > 110°C, fan stopped on a machine that was running.
  • Hold-until-morning alerts: Slow memory leak, SMART trend warning, idle temperature creep, weekly digest.

Best Practices: Keeping the Signal High

The single biggest failure mode of any alerting setup, hardware or otherwise, is alert fatigue. Once a user starts ignoring alerts, every future alert is wasted. Three rules to prevent it:

  1. One alert per event, not one per tick. A GPU that holds at 93°C for an hour should fire one alert at the start, not 720 alerts (one per 5-second poll). A re-alert after the threshold has cleared and re-crossed is fine; spamming during a sustained event is not.
  2. Suppress duplicates across the fleet. If the office air conditioning fails and 30 machines all hit 90°C simultaneously, you want one "30 machines are all running hot at the same time — likely environmental, check the AC" message, not 30 separate alerts.
  3. Auto-resolve when the condition clears. A "GPU is back below 80°C" follow-up message converts a worry into a tidy two-line incident the recipient can scroll past quickly.
